HTA/HTAC holds a
30 percent stake in Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH (FDG). FDG has two service centers primarily focused on
preventing environmental damage: Air Traffic Noise/Air Quality and Environmental Protection.
The team at the Air Traffic Noise/Air Quality service center has the job of ensuring compliance with civil and air traffic regulations
governing airport-related noise and air pollution. The center operates an aircraft noise monitoring system, comprised of 16 measuring stations -
14 fixed, one portable and one mobile. These are deployed in the area around the airport. A
24-hour hotline has also been set up to handle, and follow up, any complaints from local residents.
In 2005 alone, Düsseldorf Airport spent ten million euros on noise- protection measures for the benefit of local residents. In what is
called the day protection zone, an area with an equivalent continuous sound level of more than 60 dBA, Düsseldorf International
provided funding for general structural noise-protection measures.
Inside the night protection zone, which was extended in 2006, the airport is bearing the costs of such specific measures as structural
protection for bedrooms and noise-reducing ventilators. This means
that Düsseldorf International already meets the stricter new requirements even before they have been passed into law.
In addition to the Air Traffic Noise/Air Quality service center, there is an Environmental Protection service center which focuses on waste
disposal, water protection, environmental management and energy consulting. Priority fields here include waste management and soil management
during construction measures.
